Papierkunst: groot vel geel geschept papier met rood zegel

Why yellow?

In China, yellow was for a long time the colour of the emperor. For me it is the colour of light, of ripe rice and of the first sun after a grey Dutch winter.

When I make yellow paper, it feels as if I am holding a piece of sun.

How a work comes to life

  1. I soak fibres and old paper in water overnight.
  2. Then I grind everything into pulp and add pigment.
  3. With a mould I lift a thin layer of pulp from the vat.
  4. I press the wet sheet and let it dry.
  5. Only then do I tear, arrange and glue the sheets into an image.
